Electromelting of confined monolayer ice.

چکیده
In sharp contrast to the prevailing view that electric fields promote water freezing, here we show by molecular dynamics simulations that monolayer ice confined between two parallel plates can melt into liquid water under a perpendicularly applied electric field. The melting temperature of the monolayer ice decreases with the increasing strength of the external field due to the field-induced disruption of the water-wall interaction induced well-ordered network of the hydrogen bond. This electromelting process should add an important new ingredient to the physics of water.

Surface effect on the electromelting behavior of nanoconfined water.
Electric field induced phase transitions of confined water have an important role in cryopreservation and electrocrystallization. In this study, the structural and dynamical properties of nano-confined water in nano-slit pores under the influence of an electric field varying from 0 to 10 V nm(-1) are investigated under ambient conditions using molecular dynamics simulations. In order to replica...
متن کاملPhase transitions of a water overlayer on charged graphene: from electromelting to electrofreezing.
We show by using molecular dynamics simulations that a water overlayer on charged graphene experiences first-order ice-to-liquid (electromelting), and then liquid-to-ice (electrofreezing) phase transitions with the increase of the charge value. Corresponding to the ice-liquid-ice transition, the variations of the order parameters indicate an order-disorder-order transition. The key to this nove...
متن کاملPhase diagram of water between hydrophobic surfaces.
Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that there are at least two classes of quasi-two-dimensional solid water into which liquid water confined between hydrophobic surfaces freezes spontaneously and whose hydrogen-bond networks are as fully connected as those of bulk ice. One of them is the monolayer ice and the other is the bilayer solid which takes either a crystalline or an amorphous fo...
متن کاملHydration structure of water confined between mica surfaces.
We report further molecular dynamics simulations on the structure of bound hydration layers under extreme confinement between mica surfaces. We find that the liquid phase of water is maintained down to 2 monolayer (ML) thick, whereas the structure of the K(+) ion hydration shell is close to the bulk structure even under D = 0.92 nm confinement. Unexpectedly, the density of confined water remain...
متن کاملTwo Dimensional Ice from First Principles: Structures and Phase Transitions.
Despite relevance to disparate areas such as cloud microphysics and tribology, major gaps in the understanding of the structures and phase transitions of low-dimensional water ice remain. Here, we report a first principles study of confined 2D ice as a function of pressure. We find that at ambient pressure hexagonal and pentagonal monolayer structures are the two lowest enthalpy phases identifi...
